Fluorescence Microscopy for Space

At ASRO, we’ve leveraged a quarter-century of space instrument development expertise to bring you the Mini Fluorescence Microscope – an innovation for advanced live cell imaging in space.

Solution

Our aim was to develop the most compact fluorescence microscope possible while preserving optimal performance for diverse scientific applications, including radiation studies, microgravity research and astrobiology. The result is a remarkably compact prototype, with dimensions of approximately 82 mm x 42 mm x 33 mm, integrating four custom subsystem modules: the optics, cell culture chamber, motorized XY-stage, and electronics.

Our prototype microscope features two excitation channels and achieves a lateral resolution of 530 nm, enabling detailed examination of live cell processes. The motorized stages provide accurate sample scanning and the ability to locate areas of interest.

Next Steps

We are currently working on further developing the microscope for space applications. These development efforts aim for a versatile instrument for life sciences research in both human and robotic exploration missions, commercial space applications, and even ground-based research in challenging environments.
